Dad just told me about this campaign. The show Jericho was cancelled, and one of the last lines in the last episode was one of the characters saying "Nuts," so fans of the show, in protest, sent more than 20 tons of peanuts to the CBS HQ. The show has been renewed mid-season.

As a purely intellectual exercise, if Firefly fans had done a similar thing, what would FOX have gotten?

Objects in space, even.

Hm. Maybe a better question would be, would FOX ever have listened? To any quantity of nuts or nut products?

Of course, they aired the pilot last. So I guess "objects" probably wouldn't cut it, then. (It's also a good indication of how likely a campaign would have been to work.)

So, uh, let's see. Powerbars? Lots of Powerbars molded together with sawdust? I got nothing.

Short answer: no, because Fox is made of evil and hates bunnies.

Long answer: someone did start a very successful fund-raising campaign to essentially buy off Fox/pay them to continue producing the show/pay for the costs of future episodes. It raised a great deal of money in a very short amount of time, before the owner of the site was contacted by an unknown "high up" executive in Fox, who told him that the legal messiness of accepting outside money for production was too great, and all the donations had to be refunded.

Shorter addendum: I think Firefly fans started the practice of revolting against show cancellations, with their postcard mailing campaign prior to the cancellation of the show.

Of course, it would help if I didn't misread "what would Fox have gotten" as "would Fox have listened."

I think Fox would have gotten leaves. Leaves on the wind, baby.
